The term “tripledemic” has recently been coined to describe a triple threat of public health crises unfolding simultaneously: the continuing coronavirus pandemic, the resurgence of seasonal illness, and the threat of further upheaval in social and mental wellbeing. This is a phenomenon of unprecedented magnitude and consequence and its effects can be felt in all aspects of life for individuals and communities around the world. In this article, we will explore the various intersecting components of the tripledemic, as well as possible solutions, in order to better understand the profound ramifications of this crisis and develop ideas for serious solutions.

The coronavirus pandemic is the overriding factor for the current state of life on the planet and must be addressed before the further, critical issues of the tripledemic. In addition to the devastating death toll, the pandemic has caused fear and economic uncertainty in communities across the globe. Layoffs and reduced wages have made it harder for families to remain economically secure while they are also dealing with emotional and mental health issues, social isolation, and increased risk of illness. Measures taken to reduce the spread of the virus, including the closure of businesses and virtual learning, have resulted in additional stress and anxiety for students, parents and educators alike.

Moreover, the annual occurrence of seasonal illness is now a further element of the tripledemic. The typical high incidence of influenza, colds, and other contagious diseases like RSV occur each year, but the rate of infection could be higher because of reduced immunity caused by the pandemic. There is also the added concern that strains of the coronavirus and other contagious and severe illnesses might spread rapidly with the cold weather. Compounding this is the fact that people may not easily or affordably access medical care due to the economic insecurity created or worsened by the pandemic.

Finally, we must consider the affect the tripledemic has had on mental health issues. The anxiety and depression associated with the pandemic, as well as measures taken to reduce the risk of infection, have become more widespread and can lead to chronic mental health problems. Additionally, physical activity and outdoor activities are often more difficult during periods of increased containment, impacting the mental and emotional wellbeing of people of all ages.

In order to address the various issues involved in the tripledemic, there must be an approach focused on both economic and individual issues, as well as public health awareness. On the economic front, measures must be taken to provide for the needs of people and businesses affected by the pandemic. Stimulus plans and resources created to pay for medical expenses and provide for basic needs are an essential part of the solution. On the health front, public awareness campaigns can be implemented to promote preventative measures, such as masks, social distancing, and proper hand washing, as well as the continued development of vaccines and treatments. Finally, mental health resources must be made available to people in all communities, of all ages.

Peace!
